The History of the Ty Mawr Area, Abergele, North Wales

Ty Mawr has a rich history and is ideally located near some of the most acclaimed heritage sites Wales has to offer.

Ideally situated near some of the most acclaimed heritage sites in Wales, Ty Mawr is a mere 10 minutes stroll from the seaside resort of Rhyl and its sandy beach and offers a beautiful view of the Snowdonia mountain range just 3 miles away.

Ty Mawr in Welsh means Great (or “Large”) House, and is located in the Llangasty Talyllyn area of North Wales.  Some of the earliest recorded history of Llangasty Talyllyn dates back to 1584 when High Powell, Lord of the Manor of Llangasty Talyllyn - a title that some sources suggest was given originally to Reginald Walbeoffe by Bernarde Neufmarche, a Normal warlord and the first original conqueror of Wales From the ruins of the Welsh kingdom, he created the Anglo-Norman lordship of Brecon around 1095.

We know the Powells had owned the property for at least 50 years previously, due to a court case between himself and Blanche Parry, a servant of Queen Elizabeth I who had taken him to court over the use of some illegal weirs for fishing in the area.
